Venture investments in Q1 2011 increased by $1 billion over Q4 2010 to $7.5 billion. The increase was driven by an increase in investments in Internet and cleantech-renewable energy startups, according to CB Insights.

This was a 25% increase in the number of dollars invested over the same period last year. The money was spread of 738 deal, which is approximately the same as last year.

This represents a return to the pre-recession levels. The CB Insights “left it to others to decide whether that represents a return to normalcy or an untenable VC investment bubble.”

/PRNewswire/ — Today, a new low-cost, all-natural yogurt branded as enLiven (www.enlivenyogurt.com) launches exclusively in Walmart stores. The low-fat yogurt from Ganeden, the nation’s leading distributor of over-the-counter probiotic products, is available in four delicious flavors and features GanedenBC30 probiotics.

“Yogurt has long been touted as a healthy breakfast and snack food,” said Carl Freund, vice president of consumer products at Ganeden. “We believe Walmart shoppers will enjoy our tasty new enLiven yogurt with beneficial probiotics, as it is not only good for you and your whole family, but it is affordably priced to help save you money.”

enLiven yogurt has no artificial flavors or coloring and offers a creamy taste in vanilla, blueberry, strawberry and peach flavors. It is 99 percent fat-free and contains significant amounts of live and active cultures to support digestive health.

Scientists now recognize that 70 percent of our immune system is actually living in the digestive tract, which reinforces the importance of a healthy digestive tract. GanedenBC30 supports digestive health because of its excellent stability.

“enLiven is lower in price, sodium and fat than other leading yogurt brands,” said Freund. “We are certain people will enjoy eating this new probiotic yogurt; if not, we offer a money-back guarantee.”

About Ganeden Biotech

Founded in 1997, Ganeden Biotech, Inc. is based in Cleveland and is the largest seller of over-the-counter probiotics in the U.S. through its Digestive Advantage® and Sustenex™ brands, along with the recently launched yogurt, enLiven. It also licenses its patented probiotic bacteria, GanedenBC30, for use in commercial food and beverage applications, medical foods, nutraceuticals and in the animal health industry. GanedenBC30 (bacillus CoagulansGBI-6086) is self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) by an independent panel of experts assembled to assess its safety in use as a food ingredient.

Ganeden Biotech is a yet2Ventures portfolio company – Ben

New Study Catalogues Evidence for Probiotic, Bacillus coagulans

Review paper supports multiple health claims for specific Bacillus coagulans strain, GanedenBC30®

Cleveland (PRWEB) January 25, 2011

A new paper examining recent research and safety data published in the peer-reviewed journal Food Science and Technology Bulletin provides scientific support for Bacillus coagulans as a probiotic. The overview supports the use of probiotics in general and discusses a specific Bacillus coagulans strain, known as GanedenBC30 (Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086), manufactured by consumer healthcare company Ganeden Biotech, for its probiotic attributes. The study summarizes how GanedenBC30 supports its health claims related to safety, gastrointestinal health, immune health, joint health and includes never before published data.

“Probiotic strains have been traditionally limited to Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium,” explained Dr. Glenn Gibson, one of the world’s leading probiotic experts and co-author of the paper. “The evaluation of this recent data shows great promise for Bacillus coagulans as a new type of probiotic that’s come to the forefront.”

Probiotics, or “beneficial bacteria,” have been shown to improve digestive health and boost immunity. The challenge for many probiotic strains has always been survivability through harsh stomach acids in order to arrive in the intestines where they can have the greatest digestive health benefit. Bacillus coagulans based strains of probiotics have a distinct advantage since they form a naturally occurring layer of organic material that helps protect the delicate genetic core of the probiotic. Conventional probiotics such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are unable to form this protective shield, making them more vulnerable.

“Bacillus coagulans behaves in a totally different way than many common probiotic strains today due to its spore-forming nature,” Gibson, who is also the professor of microbiology at Reading University, England, commented. “This exciting development in probiotic technology could very well lead to seeing Bacillus coagulans probiotics like GanedenBC30 showing up in more products due to its hearty nature.”

Highlights of the research data review of GanedenBC30 include relieving abdominal pain and bloating in IBS sufferers, showing a potential to digest protein, lactose and fructose, positively affecting the immune system, protecting against two strains of influenza, decreasing joint pain and improving mobility in rheumatoid arthritis sufferers, and surviving through a simulated gastric environment. The safety data reviewed seven tests and revealed no safety issues even when GanedenBC30was consumed in high quantities.

GanedenBC30 is the probiotic included in Digestive Advantage® and Sustenex® products which have already been demonstrated safe and effective in clinical trials. GanedenBC30 can also be found as an added ingredient in over 45 functional foods and beverages, including bread, nutrition bars, instant soup mix, hot tea, ice cream, and frozen yogurt.

About Ganeden Biotech

Founded in 1996, Ganeden Biotech is a privately held company based in Cleveland, Ohio, and is the largest seller of over-the-counter probiotics in the United States through its Digestive Advantage and Sustenex brands. It also licenses its patented probiotic bacteria, GanedenBC30, for use in commercial food and beverage applications as well as in medical foods and dietary supplements.
Governments are key drivers of product innovation. Funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), for instance, is helping governments try out innovative products on infrastructure projects, such as advanced materials for pavement rehabilitation and improved sensors for smart electric grids, reports Popular Mechanics.

Boston-based yet2.com, a company that operates an online technology marketplace and provides intellectual property consulting and licensing services, has assisted governments in finding innovative products.

Tim Bernstein

“We’ve done several searches on behalf of government organizations — everything from anti-graffiti technologies for municipal transportation departments to fairly advanced military applications for the federal military,” says Tim Bernstein, yet2.com’s chief operating officer.

Bernstein’s firm has helped client technology companies close several deals based on yet2.com’s technology searches. Yet2.com’s clients include manufacturers that represent more than 40 percent of the world’s R&D capacity.

Yet2.com’s online technology marketplace lists a variety of public sector technology needs, including a need for safe efficient water treatment and a need to generate biodiesel from waste fuel. Here’s an example (with description) of a product in the yet2.com online technology marketplace that is applicable to the public sector:

DuPont Premium Playground and Landscape Mulch

The product can mimic wood mulch or take on novelty colors or shapes. Its cushioning properties meet or exceed ASTM standards for playground use.

DuPont has developed a polymer mulch suitable for playground and horticultural applications. Until now, natural or synthetic mulches have presented one or more disadvantages such as short life, possible presence of contaminants like metal fibers, easy displacement, unpleasant odor, and the ability to support fungus growth. The DuPont polymer mulch is long lasting and will not fade or rot. It is also completely contaminant free, with no risk of any metallic fragments, as occasionally found in shredded tire rubber mulches. Additional advantages over rubber mulch are its consistent, uniform appearance, no unpleasant odor and through-thickness color for long-term color retention. The mulch can be manufactured in a variety of colors, shapes and novelty decorative patterns, making it particularly attractive for playground applications. It also can be given a bark-like appearance for garden use.

Yet2.com hosts its 11th Executive Briefing — Open Innovation: Making a Step-Change Impact in Boston from May 17-19, 2011. It is a gathering where attendees can meet thought-leaders, decision-makers, and practitioners who are doing technology deals for their organizations. Specific location and details will be announced soon.

Electro Petroleum (EPI) hired yet2.com 3 years ago. We were so impressed with them that yet2Ventures invested. Now EPI has investors, route to market partners, customers and is seeing real success turning dormant oils wells into productive ones.

How did this happen?

The Market

2/3 of the world’s heavy oil is to viscous to pump. In fact there is more oil in the Canadian Oil Sands than all of the Middle East combined. The problem is that it’s to heavy to pump. The technology of choice was to ‘steam’ a well, meaning pump steam down a well, then pump up the oil/water mixture. However this requires a lot of energy to steam water and to pump it down the well. Steam condenses below about 2,000 feet, so in addition to all of the other major drawbacks, this approach doesn’t work when the oil is deep.

The Technology

Electro Petroleum uses a patented technology called EEOR – Electrically Enhanced Oil RecoverySM. The electrical field upgrades the heavy crude through an electro-chemical process, mobilizes it through electro-kinetics, and heats it through joule or resistance heating . Here’s a neat explanation of the technology. with a video.

What does all of this cost? $4/barrel.

The Solution

What did yet2.com do? We worked closely with the CEO of Electro Petroleum, Phil Bell. We introduced him to Fortune 500 companies to help vet the technology. We found capital sources to invest. We found oil fields who wanted to be customers, like Deloro. After all of this, we invested too.

Now Elecro Petroleum has wells producing that were abandoned. The first is owned by Deloro, and it’s producing more than 15 barrel per day. Other wells are in the process and looking very positive.

The Passion

We love helping entrepreneurs like Phil Bell, commercialize their technology. We love helping entrepreneurs find; partners, customers, capital and people. If you have an impressive technology we’ll love helping you too.

Recent Deloro Press Release:

Vancouver, BC, November 04, 2010 — Deloro Resources Ltd. (TSX-V DLL) (“Deloro”) is pleased to announce that the new well, Deloro Cathkin DD-7a2-25-3D15-24-38-20 successfully penetrated the McLaren oil formation at its Wilkie, SK project, estimated to contain 63,000,000 BBL of heavy oil. The McLaren formation surrounding the wellbore was stimulated with DC current for several weeks, and production was commenced in mid-October. After several days of testing it became apparent to our engineers that any oil production was being overpowered by water production to a degree indicating that a water zone adjacent to the oil zone had inadvertently been penetrated. Deloro and EPI engineering staff are confident that the issue will be corrected with further down-hole work designed to allow this well to become the Joint Venture’s second producing heavy oil well at Wilkie.

The Pilot Test well (117.3A2-25-3D 10-24-38-20) has been producing continuously with minor mechanical disruptions since late September. Daily production has ranged between 15 and 55 BBL and averages approximately 30 BBLs per day. Our technical advisors are anticipating an increase in the average daily production going forward as the equipment, pressure and flow rates are adjusted. Several shipments of oil have been made, the proceeds of which are forwarded to EPI in order to repay the cost of re-working and re-configuring the well in September.

Now that commercial oil production has been achieved at Wilkie, the Management of Deloro Resources is confident that EPI’s EEOR technology can be deployed on all of the wells contemplated on the remaining leases. Furthermore, the company’s business model of acquiring and developing production from known heavy oil reservoirs that were previous deemed non-recoverable or “stranded” is sound.
