I’ve spent some time playing around with Google Labs and I think this could be a powerful Open Innovation tool. I would like to challenge readers of this Blog to help flesh out the idea, and share your thoughts.
Let’s start with the Flu.
Turns out, each week, millions of users around the world search for online health information. As you might expect, there are more flu-related searches during flu season, more allergy-related searches during allergy season, and more sunburn-related searches during the summer. Makes sense. What is interesting is that people search for the flu on average 2 weeks before they go to the hospital. Google is able to make REAL TIME predictions ahead of the CDC
Further, Google Insight Search is able to expand this predictive modeling to technology trends or product trends. I did a few searches on competing new technologies, like Plasma or LCD.
Now this is not exactly telling one where to find a great new technology, or how to acquire, or even how to get your organization to start looking…..but there is something interesting going on here. What are your thoughts or ideas?

We will discuss this, and other Open Innovation tools at our annual conference in Boston on September 29th through October 1st: http://www.yet2.com/app/global/en/html/exec_briefing_10a.html
